The Sweet Weight of Anticipation

The Sweet Weight of Anticipation

Sagebrush glimmers as a frazzled girl struts past,
buttonless blouse taped to persistent breasts.

A cobalt-blue horse leans his head over
a barb wire fence in luminous silence.

The high school quarterback, weekend off from the feedlot,
exults, I've got a rockin' hard-on for America!

The boys without dates pass around rot-gut whiskey
and a pellet gun until one kid is shot in the hand.

And the quarterback's queen nods as he beer-gibbers.
She is sleek, a comet-bodied volleyball beauty... patient.

She uses chess pieces for .22 target practice,
loves autumnal bedspreads flung to the floor.
