Sunday, May 29, 2016
Straight Ahead: 22
Afternoon and a sweet alfalfa wind comes
across the irrigation canal... out of the northwest.
Pretty baby is baking chocolate chip cookies,
fudge-nut brownies, talking lilac-quilts.
Oh, vows of spring-lush Russian olive trees.
Saturday, May 28, 2016
Straight Ahead: 21
Wolf-gray clouds, knees almost buckling
on uphills, memory of cup-bottom tea leaves,
blood-curses of a corduroy-'n-wool necromancer....
Bone dice... you shamble into an eighth decade.
Ghosts shadow-jab, growl, Compose yourself.

Thursday, May 26, 2016
Straight Ahead: 19
You're three years without Copenhagen snuff.
It's a small town. A Memorial Day Carnival,
a Ferris wheel, the homeless with backpacks...
red, amber, and plum balloons curse the sky.
In the West, we waltz across shallow graves.

Tuesday, May 24, 2016
Straight Ahead: 17
It's just over the next sagebrush hill, a steamy bowl
of rice pilaf, yesterday's refried beans, quartered
tomatoes, crumbled burger, melted cheddar slices....
Doc Holliday cough-rasps in your ear. You wake:
arthritic hands, hunger gone, no grip for pistol or ball.
Monday, May 23, 2016
Straight Ahead: 16
Lifelong arrangements (silvery hemp rope,
or steel chain), rose bouquets, wet airport kisses.
Your 36,000-altitude dream soars on a rust flake.
Watery-eyes... dream-flight to a pine between rock.
Desert-comber... carrier of an empty clay tea bowl.
Sunday, May 22, 2016
Straight Ahead: 15
Quirky-biblical guitar music, black smoke,
malcontent chainsaw dreams, twisted rebar
in crumbled cement, throwaway phone books....
It is Sunday: a rural airport practice fire,
odor of jet fuel... an appetite for beef ribs.
Saturday, May 21, 2016
Straight Ahead: 14
Dark green of bunch grass, dead-brown weeds...
drizzle is eastbound when the neighbor boy,
maybe after a breakfast of mourning dove
(thanks to a .17 caliber rifle with a scope),
knocks the door at nine, weed whacker growling.
Straight Ahead: 13
Box canyons, meteor shower blacktop roads....
You keep count with kidney-blood country music,
dented beer cans, punching bag thud-echoes.
Soon enough a headlong pitch into a grave,
perhaps down to one not quite meant for you.
Thursday, May 19, 2016
Straight Ahead: 12
Later you wander to a gated pile of pasture rock.
You daydreamed a Western movie outlaw horse
would meet you at a fence. The sky moans misery.
Another fly-over jet. Ditch-tossed white funeral roses.
Oh... the Heaven of early ne-er-do-well Resistol years.

Tuesday, May 17, 2016
Straight Ahead: 10
A high desert land line phone no one can repair,
cathedral perfume of sagebrush, dream departures
by amber lantern: you leash your dazzle-hound,
promise her cubes of broiler pan Angus rib steak.
Obituary Tuesday... echo of graveyard wagons.
Monday, May 16, 2016
Straight Ahead: 9
Ebony lake snakes in a strawberry garden....
You daydream a five-grand Platte Valley saddle.
Spring passes like some friendships... sweep
of north wind... silence on cold fort-stone.
Ahead... the broke-wing crow of six days ago.
Sunday, May 15, 2016
Saturday, May 14, 2016
Straight Ahead: 7
Bird off a window, a woman stands a corner
by Safeway, cardboard sign: Homeless Family.
She's got a watery-eyed son, wheat-gray face,
crew-cut. Not a wisp of paper money in our car.
It's evening... taste of rain, iconic skull clouds.
Straight Ahead: 6
Pity plowed mid-May ground in a hard wind...
blowing grit. Faint-light dawn. Coyote scream.
Organic corn is-still-corn breakfast flakes,
red and blue cantina light bulbs on a mirror,
you take a cheap razor to your soapy face.
Thursday, May 12, 2016
Straight Ahead: 5
Nostalgia radio as bottled-tomatoes listeria...
road trip songs, brain-blood in yesterday time,
de regueur Stetson on your thick bone noggin'.
You roll past a sideways-growing pasture elm...
stubborn at the quickened pace of mortality.
