Wolfie's Last Christmas Eve... 2012

Wolfie's Last Christmas Eve... 2012

Patches of snow on scab rock.
Wolfie, in late afternoon,
slightly doped on a painkiller,
pain of bone cancer,
paused east of the house...
stared off... into the abyss...
amber-brown eyes sad with love... coming loss....

No snow this Christmas Eve.

On rough ground out back,
a young spruce tree
rises from volcanic soil
enriched with Wolfhound cremains.

If I drive shrub steppe all night,
will Wolfie's ghost
ride the car's back seat,
will I feel the weight of his great head
on my left shoulder, will he say,
in his little-boy-voice,
Stay awake... take us home?

MOJAVE RAMBLE-STUMBLE: A Red Shuttleworth One-Poem Chapbook

Mojave Ramble-Stumble

a poem from a decades-old notebook

Red Shuttleworth

Decades ago, back in the 1970's, when Blythe, California, had a third of its present population, back when you could drive into towns like Parker, Arizona, and get asked if you'd like to be a local librarian (without any librarian-school to your credit), I drove the Mojave, stopped at a few motels, drank in a few saloons, filled notebook pages with poems.  In 2011, after fussing and fiddling with an almost-ready-to-be-burned ancient notebook, I posted a version of Mojave Ramble-Stumble on this blog.  The places, people, and times I wrote about so long ago... they no longer exist... not really.

Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland, in Collective Memory

Child-cry of swine on Market Day,
all-night Guinness-full revelers...
a lumpy bed-'n-breakfast bed for you.

When the fever rises up your spine,
you return to a room on a three-pubs street,
glad-thank Mrs. Breen (perhaps her name).

Everything is changed now, she says,
proprietress, smiling bearer of aspirin
and tea, collector of American stamps.

It's the middle of touristy June.
Be clever, Yank, and sweat it out.
She heavens you with five blankets,

Arranmore Island, County Donegal, Ireland, in Collective Memory

April sideways rain on Leabgarrow strand.
You read Peadar O'Donnell on a bunk
by a salt-streak window, The Gates Flew Open.

The Youth Hostel is middle-of-the-week
empty... you are king of solitude, days away
from love... Flemish backpack girl in corduroy.

This was decades ago, before any Arranmore pub
grew (broken beer bottle to the neck) murderous.
Daylight at 3 a.m., she fries eggs and  pork sausage.

A kiss from the Flemish girl each time a donkey
brays its grief, Ochone, ochone, at least I'm not
a pint of an inbred mutt, deaf in all four ears.

Dublin, Ireland, in Collective Memory

Harrowing up-glance at churn-of-cloud,
the bustle of O'Connell Street...
a cloud of mad starlings from another year.

You wander north to the Gresham Hotel,
no money for a suite with a wide view,
no cash for even a closet of a room.

Rain comes hard, nails right through
your waterproof Gaelic-green zip-up
Derby-of-San Francisco tourist jacket.

Smell of damp wool, cigarettes, and chips...
neon bar signs buzz like dazed autumn flies:
you sober-jag east along the pewter Liffey.

Wells, Nevada, in Collective Memory

Wells, Nevada, in Collective Memory

AC dying in the car, you drag into town.
Earthquake: saloons and deadfall motels
flaked and crumbled like desert-dry coyote bones.

The dustiest, cheapest-ever Best Western motel,
the Sage, is empty, a cavity not quite drilled-out...
no gold filling... abandoned for a decade or more.

You think to kick-in a door for a noon nap.
Up Sixth Street, you buy a juicy cheeseburger
at Luther's, wash it down with an iced Coors.

You shamble Wells, historic district demo'd,
wonder if you'd be happy on a rocky hill
overlooking so much fibbed or fabled loss.

Mackenzie, British Columbia, Canada, in Collective Memory

Mackenzie, B.C., Canada, in Collective Memory
(A crayon sketch by Red Shuttleworth)

Mackenzie, British Columbia, Canada, in Collective Memory

Frigid trench in the Rocky Mountains,
instant sawmill town, arteries to a wilderness,
cinder block motel, snow to top single-wides:

you spend a winter trudging wolf trails,
find a moss-covered black bear skull, dip it
repeatedly in shellac: it glows holy-jade.

Your neighbor, a trapper, gives you beaver
and lynx heads, Boiled-off meat is tasty.
The wolfhound refuses cat-stench lynx.

Winter runs-out: a grizzly walks through
a glass door into the cheesy half-mall,
can't find an April-plaid jacket that fits.
