Wallet Mermaid: A Red Shuttleworth One-Act Play

Wallet Mermaid

a one-act play

Red Shuttleworth

Wallet Mermaid (cast of two women and three men in their twenties) is a romantic comedy (running time of about 45-minutes). It is contemporary... set in rural central Texas. In their twenties and terminally adolescent, with rodeo dreams and get-rich-quick schemes crumbled, Gregg, Constance, Hank, Shortson, and Sheila are crossed wires... sparking and snapping.

Wallet Mermaid received a reading, directed by the author, at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on March 23, 1990.  It had the following cast: Annelisa Blake, Christopher Danowski, J.B. Lawton, Toni Loppnow, and Ian Bradford Pugh.

Toni Loppnow
(Sheila in the UNLV reading of Wallet Mermaid)

Wallet Memaid received development and a reading at Sundance Playwrights Lab on July 18, 1990... thanks to the Lab's Artistic Director, David Kranes, who kindly and generously shoehorned this one-act play into an already full schedule of rehearsals and readings.  The Sundance reading of Wallet Mermaid was organized and directed by Lisa Peterson... with Ethan Phillips as dramaturg.

The Sundance Playwrights Lab 1990 reading of Wallet Mermaid featured the following cast:

          Daniel Jenkins.............................. Gregg
          Eden Alair.................................... Constance
          Doug Hutchison........................... Hank
          Dana Mills................................... Shortson
          Alyssa McGuinness..................... Sheila

Sound of One Hand

Sound of One Hand

Winter moonrise.   A thick sheet

of Plexiglass between you and it.

A teacher scribbled your report card,
He is not particularly well grounded.

You explained: failure to keep the meat hand

above the glove as a ground ball approached.

Giant cedars, blunter-than-thou novels,
bittersweet chocolate chips: nightmare hour.

Pure moon-color of bare rib-bone in x-rays:
the blot is a surgical staple in the sternum.

What slides so often between lucidity
and phantasmagoria...  the cold sweat of angels.

Introduction to a Past

Introduction to a Past

When it snows I think about horse-drawn wagons.

That year my mother tried to quit smoking.
It would kill her, the smoking, after two decades
of not lighting a cigarette.  She would die
like a pedestrian lifted from beneath a car.

I tried reading from the bottom up.
The classroom window was open to a warm day.
Kezar Stadium was empty across the street.
A girl I liked glanced over... rubbed
her face with a yellowish handkerchief.
I was reading about medieval puppet shows.
Or about children burning in wicker cradles.

When it snows I think about blowsy old popes.

That year a stray dog came home
and curled up on my bed with all its fleas.
I was ordered to walk the dog to the pound,
which was at least four miles away.
We stopped in every bar along the way
until we met a pale man who said he needed
a black dog to set off floral-pink wallpaper.

I was watching a film about poppies...
about the far away people who grow them.
Our English teacher spoke of poppy juice.
Up the street was a grocery store, George's.
George was bald... listened to baseball games.
There were cats in George's to keep mice away.
The store stank of week-old cat litter.
I asked George if he knew about poppy juice.
He said to try chewing tobacco instead.

Facade of night:

a tumbleweed bumps the house...
stardust tumbleweed...
cracked-stem tumbleweed...

and landfills
rise on carcass gas
and become clouds.

The desperate beauty
of a smiling,
old dog auditioning
from a pound cage....
